As I sit here and compose this post, there is a small face staring at me from the end of my bed. It's my little "sissy"- Yaeli Popovici. We've been talking about sparkle nail polish, Club Penguin puffles, and the interesting food choices of boys. She's nine, almost ten-years-old.
Growing up with two brothers is awesome. We played outside practically every day. Climbed old trees. Held many outrageous competitive races. Even though we had lots of crazy fun (kick the can, anyone?), I also had moments of hoping, even at times, desperately wanting, a sister. The long car rides where mom made me sit in the middle because my brothers were arguing, thus making me the new object of their relentless poking and taunting. I begged my parents, please have a girl! Adopt! But they said three was enough and hence, I remained the only girl.
Yaeli is also the only girl out of four- she has three brothers. She often walks around the house with a book in her hand or curled up in her bed with a little night lamp, reading. I used to do that. She's smart, funny and loves animals, her favorite being horses. Horses were my favorite. At one time, my room was wallpapered in them. Her favorite type of candy is dark chocolate, we're talking 70-90% cacao- be still my heart! Needless to say, we've bonded.
I loved being an only girl, but like I said, a part of me always wondered what it would be like to have a little sister. The Lord sees those small desires of our hearts- the things we think no one else knows. And He's really good at coming through with surprises. He surprised me and blessed me enormously with this little sis in this season of life. She's been a great source of joy, encouraged me with her random hugs and together we've even shared sincere conversations at local cafes where we sip sweet frothy beverages.
We're sharing a room this week because we have visitors in town. Somehow that makes it feel even more official. I'm really going to miss this girl after I leave, but before I get all carried away, teary and emotional, I'll end on a high note. For today, I'm thankful for this phenomenal girl- my "sissy."
I love you, Yaeli!
